Oregon women’s basketball highlighted their depth and defense, and ran away with their first game of the season in defeating the West Georgia Wolves 100-59 at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Wolves presented better defense than Oregon’s exhibition opponent last week, but had no answers for a Ducks defense that created 11 turnovers in the first quarter alone and 21 by halftime. Oregon was active with their hands and disrupted West Georgia’s offense all night.
So many times in seasons past, I have lamented Oregon’s ability to get a turnover, drive the court for an easy layup, and then completely whiff an easy bucket. It was refreshing to see those kinds of easy scores made time and again last night.
In fact, 11 of the 13 players in the game had at least one steal. All 13 players that saw game action scored at least two points.

Amina Muhammad, Katie Fiso, Sarah Rambus, Elisa Mevius, and Mia Jacobs all scored in the double-digits. Jacobs scored a team-high 16 points, and Fiso had a double-double of 10 points and 10 assists.
The Wolves had 32 turnovers in the game, to 6 for the Ducks. Oregon scored 41 points off of those turnovers. The turnovers is what really killed West Georgia; otherwise, they shot 41.9% from the field. It’s just that they had about half the attempts of Oregon.
The Ducks shot 48.9% on the night (27.8% from distance). They were only at the kine three times, shooting 4-5 for 80% at the charity stripe.

Head coach Kelly Graves had this to say after the match:
And two of the stars of the game, Mia Jacobs and Katie Fiso, had these thoughts:
Coach Graves is undefeated in Oregon season openers and now sits at 12-0 to start all of his seasons here in Eugene. The Ducks now turn their attention to their next game, a Saturday afternoon matchup in MKA against Montana. That game is at 2:00 pm PT and can be seen on Big Ten Plus.
