Down a set in this all-American quarterfinal, Jessica Pegula refused to press the panic button.
Pegula pressed the issue instead rallying past Emma Navarro 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-1 advancing to her maiden Beijing semifinal.
The fifth-seeded Pegula progressed into her 12th career WTA 1000 semifinal.
“I told myself not to get too frustrated,” Pegula said. “Just stay calm, try to relax a little bit, and not try as hard to execute the game plan.
“That kind of allowed me to play more free.”
The victory sends the 2024 US Open finalist into the China Open semifinals against Czechia’s Linda Noskova.
The 26th-seeded Noskova converted five of eight break points in a 6-3, 6-4 sweep of 81st-ranked Briton Sonay Kartal to reach her fourth semifinal of the season.
