Preview: Compound women’s field too close to call at Nanjing 2025

Becerra has got the better of Gibson in both their outdoor matches this season, at Yecheon 2024 and at the Chengdu 2025 World Games. It’s hard to read the runes of that, as the hyper-competitive Ella is easily capable of bouncing back to win.

Neither Gibson nor Becerra have yet won a World Cup final, although Gibson was runner-up in 2022 in Tlaxcala. She is the only athlete to have previously podiumed at the season closer to be back on the stage, so whatever happens there will be a new champion and new faces taking medals.

Of the rest of the field, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the world number three, looks by far the most dangerous. She took a silver medal in Madrid, but perhaps has not hit the heights this year we know she can hit outdoors.

It’s hard to see anyone else getting a look in, although the ambitious Madhura Dhamangaonkar, who won the stage in Shanghai 2025, might lead another charge.

All four – Gibson, Becerra, Vennam and Dhamangaonkar – were in action at last week’s Archery Premier League in India, getting high-pressure daily match practice for almost a fortnight.

But anything can happen in this field – and just might.
