Oklahoma defensive end R Mason Thomas entered the 2025 season in the conversation for the best edge rusher in the Southeastern Conference. On Saturday against Kent State, he looked the part.
Thomas ranked higher than every other edge player in FBS football Saturday against the Golden Flashes. The Sooners‘ senior put up outstanding numbers, registering a team-high six tackles, including two for loss, with a sack and a forced fumble. Oklahoma’s defense gave up just 135 yards while collecting five sacks and 13 tackles for loss as a team in its 44-0 win.

For the season, Thomas has lived up to expectations, too. His three sacks are tied for ninth in the SEC, while his five tackles for loss are tied for fifth. As a team, Oklahoma ranks tied for second in all of FBS in sacks with 21, and the Sooners rank first in total defense, giving up 193 yards per game. OU is the only team allowing fewer than 200 yards per contest.
Thomas and Co. could have a big day against Texas on Saturday. The Longhorns gave up six sacks and seven tackles for loss in Week 6 against Florida. In two games against power-conference opponents this year – both losses – Texas has averaged just 338.5 yards. Oklahoma’s defense is allowing just 287.5 yards per game in its two games against power-conference opponents.
Oklahoma and Texas will meet Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff.
