Rashid Khan initiates fresh controversy ahead of T20 World Cup 2026 amid ICC-Bangladesh row

Star Afghanistan all-rounder Rashid Khan made a cheeky dig at Pat Cummins while selecting four teams for the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Rashid Khan mentioned an old interview of Pat Cummins when he was asked about the same question—probable semifinals for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Cummins only picked the Australia cricket team for the semifinals at that time.

The Afghanistan superstar mentioned the old interview with a smile on his lips. As Cummins mentioned, only Australia ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, the spin-bowling all-rounder used the same reference and cheekily took a dig at Cummins. While talking with SportsTak, Rashid Khan was asked to pick four teams for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026.

In reply, mentioning the old comments, he took a dig at Pat Cummins. “Aapko last 2024 World Cup ka yaad hai? Ek interview thi jahan kisine ek team ka naam liya tha aur kaha baaki aap teen ka daal dein (You remember the 2024 World Cup? There was an interview where someone named one team and was told to add the other three),” Rashid Khan said.

Pat Cummins picked up Australia only

Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, Cummins was asked to pick the top four teams for the semifinal matches. In response, he said that he could mention only Australia and did not care about the rest of the teams.

Therefore, Rashid referred to the conversation and jokingly took a dig at Cummins before picking his favourite four teams for this year’s T20 World Cup 2026. The upcoming T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka and will start on February 7.

Because of the subcontinental conditions, Rashid believes that they have the potential to qualify for the semi-finals. Though he did not pick Australia.

Rashid Khan selected four teams for the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026

India, South Africa, and England are the other three teams picked by Rashid Khan for the four-team stage. He also said that the tournament is going to be very competitive, as there will be multiple game-changing players in every team.

Afghanistan will start their T20 World Cup 2026 match on February 8, the second day of the tournament, with the match against New Zealand in Chennai. Afghanistan is placed in Group D, alongside Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UAE cricket team.

It is worth mentioning that Afghanistan made their way to the semi-finals in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup. Despite their promising run, they faced a 9-wicket defeat against South Africa in the semi-final match and were knocked out of the title race.
