TAMPA — The Rays are working to add former Orioles manager Brandon Hyde to their baseball operations department, a source told MLB.com on Wednesday.
Hyde is expected to join Tampa Bay in a senior advisor role, offering support throughout the organization. The club did not confirm or comment on the potential addition of Hyde, and nothing is expected to be finalized until next week. FanSided’s Robert Murray first reported that Hyde was in talks to join the Rays.
Hyde most recently served as Baltimore’s manager, guiding the Orioles through a rebuild and back into the postseason. The 52-year-old was named American League Manager of the Year in 2023, when the Orioles won 101 games (two more than the Rays) to claim their first AL East title since 2014.
The Orioles were swept out of the AL Division Series by the Rangers in ‘23, lost both games to the Royals in the 2024 AL Wild Card Series and then struggled to a disappointing 75-87 record this past season. Baltimore dismissed Hyde as manager on May 17, the result of a 15-28 start.
Hyde had just one game of Major League managing experience with the Marlins in 2011 — a loss to the Rays, coincidentally, in an interim capacity — before joining the Orioles in December 2018. But he is a baseball lifer with a wide range of experience, including time in the front office.
Hyde worked under former Rays manager Joe Maddon with the Cubs, serving as Maddon’s bench coach in 2014 and ‘18 and first base coach from 2015-17. He previously held roles in the front office as the Cubs’ director of player development and their Minor League field coordinator.
Before that, Hyde spent nine seasons with the Marlins, working as a big league bench coach, a Minor League infield coordinator and a Minor League manager at three different levels. He got his start in Miami as a Minor League hitting coach following a four-year playing career in the White Sox system.
