OKTAGON is keeping their fastest-rising star active.
Frederic Vosgrone, also known as “The Neanderthal,” is set for his second bout in less than a month as he returns vs. fellow undefeated fighter Samuel Chavarria at OKTAGON 78, the promotion announced Thursday. The event takes place at Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany and streams on OKTAGON TV pay-per-view.
Germany’s Vosgrone (5-0) leans fully into the neanderthal gimmick, as his appearance and mannerisms make it easy to see why he was given the nickname. But he’s more than just a persona. He’s a talent, with an extensive grappling resume that includes a no-gi world championship. He’s undefeated in MMA with five finishes in as many professional fights, having never made it to the ninth minute.
Honduras’ Chavarria (6-0) has competed solely in Ultimate Combat Challenge (UCC), the major regional promotion in his home country. His OKTAGON debut will mark his international debut. He enters the bout with three knockouts and three decisions in six pro wins.
In his short time in front of an international MMA audience, Vosgrone has already turned heads, and his social media numbers reflect it. He’s extended outside the typical combat sports bubble, even recently brushing shoulders with The Rock and Emily Blunt at a movie premiere for “The Smashing Machine.”
After his most first-round rear-naked choke win over Fabio Moraes in September, Vosgrone and OKTAGON appeared to be at slight odds after a backstage incident occurred during which Vosgrone’s girlfriend was not allowed into a restricted area. However, the incident doesn’t appear to have effected business dealings too harshly as he’ll fight for the second time in 28 days.
