Records Tumble And Euro Berths Booked At Swiss s/c Championships

Mael Allegrini and Paul Niederberger were among the records on day two of the Swiss s/c Championships in Uster.

Allegrini clocked 26.72 in the men’s 50m breaststroke to shave 0.08 from Martin Schweizer’s long-standing national standard of 26.80 set back at the short-course worlds in Doha in 2014. Gian-Luca Gartmann matched the old record in second as both men went inside the cut for the European s/c Championships in Lublin, Poland, from 2-7 December.

Niederberger won the 1500 free in 14:57.78, lowering Antonio Djakovic’s 800 free mark by almost a second to 7:54.92 along the way as he too booked a ticket to Poland.

Noè Ponti won the 50 free and 50 back on the opening day and on Saturday he added a third title with a 1:42.91 victory in the 200 free, 0.44 off Djakovic’s Swiss record.

Roman Mityukov was twice runner-up behind Ponti on Friday but he reached the top of the 100 back podium in 50.94, inside the cut for Lublin. Gartmann (53.76), Allegrini (53.94) and Frédéric Hoigné (54.60) were all inside the QT in the 100IM with Ilan Gagnebin securing a berth in the men’s 200 fly (1:55.01).

Angelina Patt set a Swiss 50 back record on Friday and day two she secured the backstroke double with a 58.75 victory in the 100. She returned later in the session to take the 100IM title in 1:00.41.
