Red Sox Trade Rumors, 2025 Trade Deadline and Free Agent News

MLB.com is keeping track of all the latest free-agent and trade rumors involving the Red Sox right here.

July 21: Red Sox discussing Duran trade with multiple teams (report)
Although the Red Sox’s 14-4 record since June 28 has put them on a path to be Trade Deadline buyers this year, outfielder Jarren Duran remains a candidate to be dealt.

According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden (subscription required), Boston has been discussing Duran with several teams. The Padres and Phillies are particularly keen on the 28-year-old.

Duran is controllable through 2028, so the Red Sox aren’t in a rush to move him. But with Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu and top prospect Roman Anthony also on the roster, Duran doesn’t appear to have a long-term spot in Boston’s outfield. As a result, the team could consider dealing him for a controllable pitcher or a first baseman.

July 9: Multiple teams monitoring Ryan’s availability, including Red Sox
With the July 31 Trade Deadline roughly three weeks away, frontline starters are in short supply. Might the Twins — sitting at 44-47 entering Wednesday — look to capitalize on the market by making one of their best arms available?

According to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi, rival clubs are keeping an eye on Joe Ryan in case Minnesota decides to do just that. Per Morosi, the Red Sox are one of the teams showing interest in Ryan, who is controllable through 2027.

After dealing away Rafael Devers in June and going into July with a 42-44 record, the Red Sox were viewed as a possible Trade Deadline seller. The club has a number of attractive players on expiring deals, including Alex Bregman (opt-out after 2025), Aroldis Chapman and Lucas Giolito.

However, with five straight wins (albeit against the last-place Nationals and Rockies), Boston currently sits only one game out in the AL Wild Card race and cannot be ruled out as a buyer.

As Morosi notes, it’s also possible the Red Sox do a little of both at the Trade Deadline, with an eye on improving their chances of contending in 2026. Jarren Duran (controllable through 2028) has been floated as a potential trade candidate, given Boston’s glut of outfielders since top prospect Roman Anthony made his MLB debut. Morosi speculates that the Red Sox could dangle Duran as the centerpiece of a package to land a controllable starter such as Ryan.
