Due to personal issues from champion Ilia Topuria, the UFC implemented an interim belt in the weight class and set Gaethje (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) and Pimblett (23-3 MMA, 7-0 UFC) to compete for it over No. 1 contender Arman Tsarukyan.
