Rex Maurer Downs 25-Year-Old Pool Record, Jillian Cox Improves School Mark as Texas Tops Texas A&M

Rex Maurer downed a Texas A&M Rec Center Natatorium record that had stood since 2001, leading Texas to a dual meet sweep Friday.

Jillian Cox also improved her school record in the 1,000 free for the Longhorns. The men’s team scored a 230-70 win over the Aggies. The Longhorn women prevailed, 207-92.

Maurer’s record erased the long-standing standard set in 2001 by Chris Thompson. That split of 8:44.11 was the American record, the split off the front of his 1,650 freestyle win at NCAAs for the University of Michigan swimmer.

Maurer took it down Friday emphatically by going 8:37.19. He led a 1-2-3 in the 1,000, followed by Alec Enyeart and Aiden Hammer. Maurer also won the 200 individual medley in 1:42.97.

Cox won the 1,000 free in 9:23.84. That improves her program record of 9:24.82 set in 2024. Kate Hurst pushed her all the way in 9:26.12, a best time for her by more than 5.5 seconds. She also won the 500 free in 4:36.89, again with Hurst second.

On the men’s side, the 100 backstroke provided excitement, with Will Modglin winning a duel of three Longhorns. He went 46.10 to edge Hubert Kos by .02 seconds and Kyle Peck by .07. Kos got revenge in the 200 back with a win in 1:39.91, with Peck (1:41.11) second and Modglin (1:42.96) third. Kos would end up winning the 100 butterfly in 45.82, ahead of Ksawery Masiuk’s 45.96.

Nate Germonprez went the breaststroke events, going 50.92 in the 100 and 1:52.47 in the 200. Rafael Fente-Damers won the 200 free in 1:33.66 and the 100 free in 43.10, with 50 free winner Garrett Gould (19.35) second in the latter. Cooper Lucas was second in the 200 fly to Ryan Branon before winning the 500 free in 4:17.99.

Modglin, Germonprez, Gould and Fente-Damers went 1:23.09 to win the 200 medley relay. Gould, Kos, Peck and Fente-Damers went 2:49.72 in the 400 free relay.

Texas A&M’s win on the men’s side came in 1-meter diving, where Emilio Trevino’s score of 350.78 points edged out Nick Harris by just over a point. No one could catch Harris’ 405.23 on 3-meter.

Campbell Stoll pulled an impressive double for the Longhorns women’s team, going 1:54.02 to win the 200 fly and 1:57.62 in the 200 IM. She also swam breaststroke on the 200 medley relay that went 1:35.84 (Emma Kern, Lillian Nesty, Eva Okaro).

Nesty and Okaro teamed with Alexa Fulton and Brooke Adams to go 3:14.74 in the 400 free relay win. Fulton won the 50 free in 22.51, with Lucy Mehraban second in 22.60 and Nesty third in 22.64. Okaro was second in the 200 free, .25 behind the 1:45.27 of teammate Inez Miller, and in the 100 fly, behind Angie Coe’s 52.29.

Piper Enge won the 100 breast in 1:00.49. Haley McDonald claimed the 200 back. Texas swept diving, with Alejandra Estudillo scoring 324.08 on 1-meter and finishing three points behind the winning score of teammate Bayleigh Cranford (344.03) on 3-meter.

Kaitlyn Owens won the 100 back in 51.65 for Texas A&M, and Ella McQuinn’s 48.72 led the 100 free. Hannah O’Leary (2:10.95) and Lillie Sczech went 1-2 in the 200 breast.
