Richard Petty is mourning the loss of an iconic NASCAR figure on Thursday morning.
The NASCAR world announced on Thursday morning that Humpy Wheeler, the former President of Charlotte Motor Speedway, has passed away. Wheeler, known for spearheading the movement to get lights put into the iconic NASCAR track, died on Wednesday evening, August 20. The Charlotte Motor Speedway officially announced his death on Thursday morning.
"Humpy’s engaging smile and flair for promotion were legendary, and his impact on every stakeholder in motorsports will be long-lasting. Often described as the 'P.T. Barnum of motorsports,' Humpy not only made his mark with publicity, but also with a laser-focus toward the fans. He would often tell his staff to pay attention to 'the three Ts – tickets, traffic and toilets” in order to ensure fans have the best possible experience. He would also say it was our job to put a little “technicolor in people’s black-and-white lives,'" the Charlotte Motor Speedway announced.
"While the motorsports world has lost an icon, the legacy H.A. 'Humpy' Wheeler created by building and promoting remarkable events at Charlotte Motor Speedway will continue for generations to come."
Wheeler served as the president of NASCAR's biggest track for more than 30 years. He was hired by Speedway Motorsports founder Bruton Smith in 1975. Wheeler ultimately oversaw the operations of the premier NASCAR venue until his retirement in 2008.
Richard Petty, one of the most iconic figures in NASCAR history, is deeply saddened.
Petty, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion who competed from 1958 to 1992, took to social media to pay tribute to Humpy.
"I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Humpy Wheeler. Humpy was one of a kind, a true showman and one of the sharpest minds this sport has ever seen. We’ll all miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family," Petty wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Legendary NASCAR figures are all paying tribute
Several legendary NASCAR figures, from Dale Earnhardt Jr. to reporter Bob Pockrass, have all weighed in on Humpy's passing.
"He massively impacted the growth and excitement of the entire sport. Helped tons of drivers and other individuals obtain opportunities that changed lives and careers. Always a friend and supporter to the industry. RIP Humpy," Dale Jr. wrote.
"Former Charlotte Motor Speedway track president Humpy Wheeler died last night. He was 86. He spearheaded putting lights up at Charlotte (no big tracks had lights at the time). Also instrumental in Janet Guthrie competing in World 600. RIP," Bob Pockrass wrote.
Wheeler died of natural causes. NASCAR will continue to mourn him throughout the remainder of the 2025 Cup Series season.
