Roger Federer imagines facing Jannik Sinner but sees himself in Carlos Alcaraz

Roger Federer is back in Melbourne for the first time in six years. The six-time champion held a press conference.

The legend reflected on how he now experiences the sport and mentioned Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Roger is no longer a competitor but a keen observer of the sport's new leaders. The 20-time Major winner visited Wimbledon last year and watched a thrilling clash between Grigor Dimitrov and Sinner from the box.

The duel sparked the legend's curiosity, prompting him to imagine what it might have been like to challenge the Italian. Roger and Jannik practiced a couple of times, but they never met in an official match.

With Dimitrov imposing his A-game, and Federer knowing it very well, the Swiss realized what he would have to do in a potential duel against the young Italian.

Roger acknowledged that Jannik's game represents a very different challenge. He felt stronger connection with Carlos, bringing the Spaniard to his story.

Alcaraz's creativity, willingness to move forward, deft use of slices and drop shots and seamless shifts between defense and attack reminded the Swiss more of his instincts as a player.

The story goes beyond technique, as Federer recognized a familiar mindset in Alcaraz – an ability to enjoy the moment while embracing pressure. When you see Carlos smiling, you know his rival is in all kind of trouble.

After decades on the court, Roger now watches tennis with genuine curiosity and appreciation. His eye for the game remains as sharp as ever, and he might witness another thrilling Major final between the world's dominant figures.

Jannik and Carlos are the favorites to reach the Australian Open title clash. It would be their fourth consecutive Major final and another prove of their incredible consistency on the most notable scene.

"When I saw Grigor against Jannik at Wimbledon, I started imagining what it would be like to face him. He is very different from me. Instead, when I watch Carlos, I feel closer to his style: the drop shots, the runs to the net, the ability to alternate defense and attack.

I identify with his mentality. Today, I enjoy tennis as a simple fan," Roger Federer said.
