Rory McIlroy doesn’t understand Sergio Garcia’s Irish Open withdrawal

by

There were certain dilemmas about whether Sergio Garcia would perform at the Ryder Cup, but it was clear that he did not have such a great chances to perform at this competition.

The final decision of the captain of Europe, Luke Donald, was not to give him a chance. So the Spanish golfer will obviously follow this prestigious competition from his armchair at home.

The popular Rory McIlroy reflected on the absence of Garcia from this year's Amgen Irish Open, after the 45-year-old withdrew, not being included in the European team for the Ryder Cup.

Speaking about the reasons for his withdrawal, Garcia emphasized that psychological difficulties were the main reason, because it was quite hard for him to accept Donald's decision.

McIlroy commented on the Spaniard's absence, saying he believes Garcia deserves to be part of this tournament. On the other hand, Rory understands that each golfer has the freedom and right to make such decisions.

“He was supposed to be here."- he said, as quoted by the Irish Examiner.

The Northern Irish golfer revealed whether he understands Sergio's concerns:

"Em, no, I don’t. It would have been great for the tournament if Sergio had played. But obviously he was trying to keep himself sharp, if he did get a pick.

He has the right to enter and pull out of any tournaments he wants to. I think Luke has assembled a very strong 12 players and I think the right 12 players.

I'm sure he (Garcia) is disappointed, but at the same time, I'm sure he wishes Europe well and wants us to win.”

Luke Donald reacts

The captain of the European team, Luke Donald, pointed out that the Spanish golfer is disappointed, just like those who may have been close to this team. However, the captain knew that Sergio Garcia wasn't quite impressive this year, and there were plenty of European golfers who were in much better shape, having a chance to prove themselves in this tournament.

No matter how experienced they are, Luke wants to have individuals who are in shape, with the potential to help the team.

Donald apparently believes that an experienced golfer cannot help them at this time.
