Rumor About Ex-WWE Writer Vince Russo Working With NWA Debunked

by

A rumor claiming Vince Russo was joining the NWA creative team blew up online this week—but one of Russo’s closest colleagues just shut it down in brutal fashion.

The talk began after Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer discussed the report, suggesting Russo might be involved with the National Wrestling Alliance. During the segment, Meltzer gave his blunt take on the situation, questioning the significance of the move and the current state of the promotion.

“You’ve heard as much as I have, but it sounds like he’s gonna work NWA. I don’t… what does it matter? You know, it’s NWA. It’s like—he can’t—how can he make it better or worse? NWA has—no—they don’t have any television that anybody’s watching. I guess they have a YouTube show.”

Meltzer added that NWA owner Billy Corgan has always been supportive of Russo’s work and wasn’t surprised by the rumor.

“Billy Corgan was never anti-Russo at all. He was a pro-Russo guy. So that doesn’t surprise me. But when, you know… I just think like—why doesn’t somebody give somebody new a shot at this? But it’s NWA, and unless they get viable television, it’s kind of like a moot point.”

He also acknowledged Russo’s success during WWE’s Attitude Era but doubted his involvement would have much impact today without a TV deal.

“Maybe… maybe he can go, ‘Hey, this is the guy who ran 1997–1998 when they were doing giant numbers. He was the guy who wrote when Steve Austin was on top.’ Maybe that will help him get TV… Maybe. I don’t know. It’s 28 years ago now, but stranger things have happened.”

Meltzer ended by mentioned that NWA’s lack of star power limits what any creative change could do.

“NWA doesn’t have that young guy like a Je’Von Evans that everyone needs to catch. And anyone who’s good is under contract somewhere else. So I mean, it doesn’t really matter what Russo does unless there’s TV and a real platform.”

However, Jonathan Coachman—who co-hosts a podcast with Vince Russo—responded directly to the claim and set the record straight. Taking to Twitter, Coachman made it clear the report was completely false and accused the wrestling media of spreading fiction.

“Why do we continue to throw stuff against the wall and hope it sticks? This story is so far off. So wrong. Absolute fiction. How do I know? I did what no one in wrestling ‘media’ ever does. I actually called my partner and asked him. Novel concept.”

Coachman added that he already knew the truth but verified it with Russo just to double-check before speaking out.

“I actually already knew the real story but thought I would double check. Stop reading headlines. Most always false when it comes to wrestling headlines like this one.”

Vince Russo himself also weighed in on the situation, mocking the rumor and those who believed it.

“Yeah… Not NWA. You Marks are still getting worked after all these years.”

As of now, there’s no indication that Russo has any connection to the NWA, and Coachman’s statements make it clear that the rumor didn’t just miss the mark—it never had a leg to stand on.

Do you think Coachman did the right thing by calling out the false report publicly, or should these disputes stay behind the scenes? Let us know what you think in the comments.
