Sam Querrey jokingly labeled Madison Keys "a coaching nightmare" as the former 10-time ATP champion thinks she put her husband Bjorn Fratangelo in an uncomfortable spot by making him her coach.
Fratangelo, a former world No. 99, hasn't still officially retired from pro tennis but he hasn't played any matches since August 2023. The 32-year-old may have been out of action for more than two years now, but he is still actively traveling since he has been a part of Keys' coaching staff for quite some.
After announcing their engagement in 2023, Keys and Fratangelo tied the knot in late 2024. Shortly after, the 30-year-old American WTA star went on to become a Grand Slam champion at the Australian Open.
While working with her husband has evidently helped the American WTA star, Querrey suggests that there may be moments when it is hard for the two to separate business from private life.
Querrey: What if you get in a little fight, but then you've got a Grand Slam quarterfinal?
"It's got to be Madison Keys. Her coach is her husband. Like, how do you separate, like what's going on? I would just think that'd be difficult. What if you get in a little fight, but then we got like a Slam quarter we got to deal with right now. It just feels like a nightmare to coach your wife or vice versa, coach your husband. Yeah. Madison Keys (is a) coaching nightmare," Querrey said on the Nothing Major Show.
In one of her past interviews, Keys funnily admitted that she had to "force" Fratangelo to become her coach because he initially felt "uncomfortable" with that idea.
"He started helping me about a year and a half, two years ago, and he really didn’t want to. He said he was very uncomfortable with telling me what to do and did not want to do it. I basically had to force him to come with me," the reigning Australian Open champion said.
