Sandy Brondello will be the first head coach of the expansion Toronto Tempo, per the reporting of The IX Sports’ Howard Megdal.

A two-time WNBA championship-winning head coach with 13 years of head coaching experience in the W, in addition to eight seasons as an assistant and nine years as the head coach of the Australian National Team, Brondello was considered the favorite to the land the head job with the WNBA’s first non-US franchise. She was also in contention for the position with the Seattle Storm and Dallas Wings.

In contrast to organizations that are reportedly interested in coaches with experience outside the WNBA, Toronto appears to have prioritized a coach who not only is familiar with the league, but is familiar with how to win in the league. With a career winning percentage of .600, Brondello led the Phoenix Mercury to a title in her first season in charge in 2014. A decade later, she delivered the first championship in franchise history to the New York Liberty in 2024, and after four seasons in New York, she exited the organization as their winningest head coach.

The Tempo are expected to officially announce Brondello’s hire in the coming days.

This story will be updated with additional information after the hire becomes official.
