Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza says Novak Djokovic's recent win over Jannik Sinner clearly shows the Serb still has the game and therefore believes the Serb "cannot be counted out."
After not winning a Grand Slam since the 2023 US Open and not making a Major final since 2024 Wimbledon, the 38-year-old reached the Australian Open final after edging out defending champion Sinner 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4.
Playing against world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz for the Australian Open title, Djokovic made a very strong start and took the opening set 6-2. Sadly for the record 24-time Grand Slam champion, he couldn't keep up with the same level for the rest of the match as Alcaraz stormed back to win 2-6 6-2 6-3 7-5.
Last year, Djokovic defeated Alcaraz at the Australian Open. At the start of this season, the current world No. 3 clinched his first victory against Sinner since 2023.
Mirza, a former doubles world No. 1 who won six Grand Slam titles across women's and mixed doubles, thinks there is still a chance the Serbian tennis giant gets to elusive Slam No. 25.
Mirza: We can never count Djokovic out… He can still beat the best players
"We can never count Novak out. That is the truth about it. He beat Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open 2026 semifinals. And he's somebody who has clearly shown us that, even after all these years and at this age, he can still beat the best players in the world and be among the best. So you can never count Novak out," former six-time Grand Slam doubles winner Mirza told ANI News.
Beating Sinner for the first time in a long time certainly made Djokovic happy. However, failing to get the job done against Alcaraz also probably left a sour taste in the Serb's mouth.
If Djokovic wins his 25th Grand Slam title before retiring, he will become the first male or female player in tennis history to achieve the feat.
