SEC Power Rankings: Vanderbilt rising, LSU falling entering Week 10

This past weekend in the SEC certainly delivered some wild results overall.

Home to three ranked matchups, each of the higher ranked teams won those respective games, but what was the most notable takeaway from the SEC in Week 9 was what almost happened in the conference.

That is because one of the conference’s top teams was nearly upset on the road, while another of the SEC’s best was also tested away from home. Each of those games produced noteworthy results, with both escaping with the win.

Elsewhere, there were also some other surprising results, one of which has now led to a head coaching change at a certain prominent SEC program.

Following are the latest SEC power rankings entering Week 10, which is the first update in two weeks.

16. Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky remains winless in SEC play following a 56-34 home loss against Tennessee on Saturday night. The fourth consecutive loss for Kentucky, the Wildcats never led in the game, even despite five touchdown passes from Cutter Boley.

Ahead of a road trip to Auburn, Kentucky sits at 2-5 overall (0-5 SEC).

15. Arkansas Razorbacks

Arkansas’ struggles continued Saturday with a 33-24 home loss to Auburn, the Razorbacks sixth-straight defeat. In the loss, Arkansas saw success at times, especially early, but were plagued by a rough fourth quarter in which they were outscored 17-0, as well as saw Taylen Green throw three interceptions.

The Razorbacks are now 2-6 overall (0-4 SEC) ahead of a home matchup against Mississippi State.

14. Florida Gators

Florida was the first-of-two SEC teams to not play Saturday due to a bye week. The Gators return to action in Week 10 against rival Georgia in Jacksonville, which will also be the first game of the post-Billy Napier era at Florida (3-4 overall, 2-2 SEC).

13. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Mississippi State nearly pulled off a significant SEC upset Saturday night, falling at home to Texas in overtime, 45-38. The Bulldogs fourth consecutive loss, Mississippi State actually led for a majority of this contest in regulation, but even despite four touchdown passes from Blake Shapen, surrendered the lead late to fall in another SEC game.

Now sitting at 4-4 overall (0-4 SEC), Mississippi State will travel to Arkansas this Saturday for a battle of winless teams in conference play.

12. Auburn Tigers

Auburn and head coach Hugh Freeze picked up a needed win Saturday in Fayetteville against Arkansas, 33-24. In the win, Auburn forced four Arkansas turnovers defensively, and pulled away late with a fourth quarter comeback behind backup quarterback Ashton Daniels, who replaced Jackson Arnold earlier in the contest.

The Tigers first conference win, Auburn’s record now sits at 4-4 overall (1-4 SEC) entering a home game against Kentucky.

South Carolina nearly shocked the college football world Saturday in Columbia with a near upset of Alabama, falling 29-22 at home. In the loss, South Carolina actually outgained Alabama in total yardage, 333-325, but had a costly penalty late that allowed the Crimson Tide to make a comeback in the fourth quarter.

Having lost three-straight, South Carolina is now 3-5 overall (1-5 SEC) ahead of a challenging road trip to Ole Miss.

10. LSU Tigers

LSU suffered one of the SEC’s most surprising results of Week 9, a 49-25 home loss against Texas A&M. A game that has now resulted in parting ways with head coach Brian Kelly, LSU posted only 278 yards of total offense, and went outscored 35-7 in the second half after owning a lead at halftime.

The Tigers enter a bye week at 5-3 overall (2-3 SEC).

9. Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma came up just short in a back-and-forth contest Saturday at home against Ole Miss, falling 34-26. In the loss, Oklahoma owned a slim advantage entering the fourth quarter, but were shutout in the game’s final frame to drop the Top 15 showdown.

The Sooners record sits at 6-2 overall (2-2 SEC) entering a challenging road game at Tennessee where Oklahoma likely needs a win.

8. Missouri Tigers

Missouri fell in a close contest Saturday in Nashville, 17-10, to a red hot Vanderbilt team. This was the Tigers second one-possession loss this season, with this coming despite Missouri outgaining Vanderbilt in total yardage, 376-265.

The Tigers own a 6-2 overall record (2-2 SEC) entering a bye week.

7. Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee bounced back with a big 56-34 road win at Kentucky where the Volunteers offense was the story. With the Volunteers never trailing, Tennessee posted 504 yards of total offense, forced two turnovers defensively, and saw quarterback Joey Aguilar complete 20-of-26 passes for 396 yards and three touchdowns.

The Volunteers own a 6-2 overall record (2-2 SEC) ahead of a massive home game against Oklahoma.

6. Texas Longhorns

Texas extended their winning streak to three-straight Saturday following a 45-38 road win at Mississippi State in overtime. During the win, Texas made a big fourth quarter comeback to force overtime, and saw quarterback Arch Manning account for four total touchdowns.

Now sitting at 6-2 overall (3-1 SEC), Texas will host Vanderbilt in arguably the SEC’s Week 10 top matchup.

5. Vanderbilt Commodores

The Vanderbilt Commodores picked up another big win Saturday at home, defeating Missouri 17-10. This came despite Vanderbilt only posting 265 yards of total offense, with the Commodores taking a late lead following a touchdown run from Diego Pavia.

Vanderbilt (7-1 overall, 3-1 SEC) continues their memorable run Saturday at Texas.

4. Ole Miss Rebels

Ole Miss and head coach Lane Kiffin picked up a massive 34-26 road win at Oklahoma on Saturday. Led by a pair of rushing touchdowns from Kewan Lacy, Ole Miss pulled away late in the contest with a 9-0 edge in the fourth quarter to secure a big victory for the Rebels.

At 7-1 overall (4-1 SEC), Ole Miss will host South Carolina during Week 10.

3. Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia was the second SEC team idle Saturday due to a bye week. The Bulldogs (6-1 overall, 4-1 SEC) will be back in action during Week 10 against rival Florida in Jacksonville.

2. Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M had one of the SEC’s most impressive performances of Week 9, routing LSU in Baton Rouge, 49-25. In the win, Texas A&M originally trailed 18-14 at halftime, but went on to dominate the second half to the tune of a 35-edge across the third-and-fourth quarters, while also holding LSU to only 278 total yards of offense.

The SEC’s lone undefeated team remaining, Texas A&M (8-0 overall, 5-0 SEC) enters a bye week.

Alabama remains in the top spot following a thrilling comeback road win at South Carolina, 29-22. A game where the Crimson Tide actually trailed in the fourth quarter, Alabama used some massive plays late from the likes of Deontae Lawson and Germie Bernard to win a game where they did not play their best.

The Crimson Tide are now 7-1 overall (5-0 SEC) entering a bye week.
