GM Wesley So is back in the top-10 on the September 2025 FIDE rating list after winning the 2025 Sinquefield Cup, while 20-year-old GM Vincent Keymer has broken into the club for the first time after winning the 2025 Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters. GM Anish Giri slipped out despite finishing second in Chennai, while GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov crashed out after losing five games in St. Louis. GM Arjun Erigaisi edged up to world number-five, ahead of World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, after both had disappointing events.
10 of the world’s top-13 players competed in games that counted to the September FIDE rating list, with some shake-ups in the standings.

Three players tied for first place in the Sinquefield Cup, with GMs Fabiano Caruana (world number-three) and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu (world number-four) picking up 5-6 rating points and qualifying for the 2025 Grand Chess Tour Finals in Sao Paulo later this month. The third player was So, who won the playoff, picked up 11 rating points, and climbed five spots to world number-seven, his first time in the top-10 since October 2024.
Thank you to everyone who noticed my Sinquefield win and sent a kind message. For me, the draw of chess isn’t fame or even money. I play because I love this game. I had a peak experience yesterday, but even during the valley times, it’s beauty and interest never fades for me.…
— Wesley So (@WesleySo_) August 28, 2025
The only disappointment for the three-time U.S. chess champion is that he missed out on the Tour Finals by the narrowest of margins.
Some other top players struggled in St. Louis. World Champion Gukesh scored -1 to slip below Arjun to sixth place on the rating list, GM Alireza Firouzja kept his eighth spot despite finishing second last and dropping 12 rating points, while Abdusattorov’s last place on 2.5/9 saw him jettison 23 points and drop four spots to world number-11.
The other big climber at the top was German number-one Keymer, who completely dominated the Chennai Grand Masters, finishing a full two points ahead of the field after winning five games and suffering no losses. He picked up 21 rating points to climb 11 places to world number-10. When he first hit that spot on the live list he called it “truly a special and memorable moment for me.”
Entering the World Top 10 for the very first time, truly a special and memorable moment for me. Thank you to all the many people who supported me along the way it wouldn’t have been possible without you. pic.twitter.com/ybCtt5PdKp

It had looked as though he might miss out on being top-10 officially, but Abdusattorov’s collapse in St. Louis meant Keymer could also notch up the official milestone.

FIDE Circuit 2025 Top 15: September 1, 2025
Praggnanandhaa for once failed to win a playoff, but his tie for first place in the Sinquefield Cup gave him another 20-point haul of FIDE Circuit points. He now has a whopping 107 from five closed events, more than double the 52.77 of second-placed Giri, with the proviso that he still needs to play two events with 50+ players for all those scores to count toward his maximum of seven events.
Praggnanandhaa can meet those requirements via the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss, where he starts as the top seed in three days’ time in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and the 2025 FIDE World Cup, set to be held in Goa, India this November.
Finished 2nd at the #SinquefieldCup 🏆
Grateful for the battles, the learnings, and the support throughout the event.
Excited to share that I’ve also qualified for the Grand Chess Tour Finals in Brazil 🇧🇷♟️On to the next challenge! pic.twitter.com/6NE3ZaKFiw

His rivals, meanwhile, will be hoping he qualifies for the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament via one of those events, by finishing in the top-two in the Grand Swiss or the top-three in the World Cup. If he does, then Giri and Abdusattorov, despite dropping out of the top-10, are perfectly placed to battle for the Candidates spot via the Circuit.

The junior top-five was unchanged despite GM Raunak Sadhwani dropping 18 points in the 2025 Turkish Super League, but there was a castling of the Turkish prodigies after that event. 14-year-old GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus edged ahead of 16-year-old GM Ediz Gurel, who dropped 21 points despite only losing two games… and playing the move of the event and arguably the year!
Gurel’s opponent, 18-year-old GM Denis Lazavik, coincidentally gained 21 points in the same month and crossed a classical rating of 2600 for the first time in his career.
It was, as usual, a good month for Indian prodigies. 19-year-old GM Leon Luke Mendonca returned to the top-10 Juniors, while 18-year-old GM Pranesh M entered the top-10 for the first time after winning the Chennai Grand Masters Challengers—a result that qualifies him for the Masters in 2026. GM Abhimanyu Mishra is level on points with Pranesh and is building an unusual record for a junior—he’s currently unbeaten in 56 games, since losing to GM Ray Robson in the penultimate round of the 2024 U.S. Chess Championship.
The biggest climber in the top-30 was 18-year-old Aditya Mittal, who had dropped rating in the last year but has hit a fine run of form (climbing even more on the live list!), including winning the 2025 Qonaev Cup.

The standout result on the women’s list was a surprise, not least for U.S. WGM Tatev Abrahamyan herself, who called her victory in the Budapest One Week GM the “best tournament of my career.” She catapulted up 64 points to 2407 and Women’s world number-37, earning not only a GM norm but something she admitted “wasn’t on my radar,” the 2400 rating she needed to confirm her IM title after long since gaining the three norms required.
At the top it continues to be the year of GM Zhu Jiner, who moved up to Women’s world number-four with a remarkable eight wins in nine games in the Turkish Super League.

She continued that form into the 2025 Fujairah Global Superstars, with a 2700-performance to tie for fifth place—though the points gained will appear on the next rating list.
Zhu’s 8/9 was impressive, but Georgian GM Nino Batsiashvili scored a perfect 7/7 in the Spanish League, gaining 28 points with a performance rating difficult to quantify, since perfect scores break the system!

For some to rise others must fall, however, and it was a tough month for Indian GMs Vaishali Rameshbabu (-24) and Harika Dronavalli (-20), who struggled in the Chennai Grand Masters.
Prodigy Watch: Erdogmus Still Top Player Ever For His Age
The Prodigy Watch by Chess By The Numbers founder Tai Pruce-Zimmerman tracks the progress of young chess superstars, with his “prodigy rank” a measure of how a player’s current rating at their current age compares historically. If there are 11 players in chess history who have been rated higher at or before the player’s age, then the player would have a prodigy rank of 12. You can read more about Prodigy Watch here, while here’s this month’s update:
Prodigy Watch Top 5: September 1, 2025
Player | Rating | Age | Prodigy Rank | FED | Change from August 2025 |
Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus | 2646 | 14.25 | 1 | –
Roman Shogdzhiev | 2408 | 10.57 | 2 | -1
Faustino Oro | 2464 | 11.88 | 3 | -1
Luca Protopopescu | 2174 | 9.43 | 5 | +18
Ashwath Kaushik | 2264 | 10.07 | 7 | – |
There was minimal movement at the top of Prodigy Watch this month. Erdogmus gained four more rating points, marginally increasing his record rating for his age and maintaining his #1 prodigy rank. 10-year-old IM Roman Shogdzhiev slid to a #2 prodigy rank without any rating change, just on the basis of being a month older, and 11-year-old IM Faustino Oro dropped a single rating point, sliding to a #3 rank from his #2 last month.

Joining the above trio in the category of players among the all-time top five for their age this month was French CM Luca Protopopescu, who regained 74 points this month and is back to a #5 prodigy rank, rated 2174, and still more than six months away from his 10th birthday. Also notable was a player we mentioned in last month’s rating update, Zechen Yu, who gained another 92 rating points this month (on top of his 182 points gained last month) and is suddenly closing in on the 2400 rating barrier with a prodigy rank that has now risen to #14.

Prishita Gupta | 2353 | 14.23 | 13 | +2 |
In our girls rankings, WFM Alanna Berikkyzy jumped to a #6 prodigy rank, achieving a new peak rating of 2241 (+79 this month), while our other girls who were top-ten of all time for their age last month (WFM Bodhana Sivanandan, IM Lu Miaoyi, and WCM Stella Xin) all remained so, with Stella also pushing her rating to a new high mark of 1962. And as always we highlight players under 10 years old who passed the 2000 rating mark for the first time, with just one name this month. Sarbatho Mani jumps to a Prodigy Rank of 61 with his 2073 rating.
