Twenty-six years ago, Venus Williams and Serena Williams partnered to capture the US Open doubles championship.

The Williams sisters may well stage a US Open reunion this month, their former coach says.

Rick Macci, who worked with the teenage Venus and Serena when they first moved to Florida, says its probable the Williams sisters will take a US Open doubles wild card and reform their life-long partnership in Flushing Meadows.

“Asked if Serena will play doubles with Vee at the OPEN. My gut is probably because at the end of the day Serena can still play even though she has been away,” Macci posted on social media. “Her serve is still one of the best on the planet and when she competes her mindset is like granite.”

The 45-year-old Venus Williams has accepted a US Open Mixed Doubles wild card and will play mixed with good friend Reilly Opelka in New York. There’s widespread speculation Venus could also accept a US Open singles wild card and/or play US Open doubles with Serena.

Earlier this month, former No. 1 Venus launched her return in Washington, DC where she defeated 35th-ranked Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 before bowing to Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16.

Playing on a wild card in Cincinnati, Venus was competitive in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena has posted video of herself hitting and training on social media. Serena looks ripped, sporting the familiar six-pack abs she had during her playing days.

Asked about a possible Serena comeback, Venus replied “I’m her biggest fan. I never wanted her to retire.”

Venus added she’s seen Serena hitting on the practice court, noting her 43-year-old sister “clocks it clean.”

“She can take six months off and she clocks it clean. You can’t teach that kind of talent,” Venus said of Serena. “She’s just so good.

“I don’t know what she’s going to do. I don’t ask those questions. I think we always hit the ball, because that’s who we are, we’re always hitting. Quite frankly, it’s great cardio. You get great legs and great arms from tennis, quiet as it’s kept. So obviously that’s part of her goal too is to stay in shape.

“I mean, I keep saying to my team, The only thing that would make this better is if she was here, like we always did everything together, so of course I miss her.

“But if she comes back, I’m sure she’ll let y’all know.”
