Shreyas Iyer’s injury has not only been a concern for his family and the Indian National Cricket Team but also for all his fans back in India and across the globe. The Indian star faced a life-threatening injury but has recovered from it quite swiftly; however, his stay in Australia continues to lengthen with time.
The Indian superstar, who started off well with the bat at Adelaide, faced a blunt injury to his lower abdomen, as a result of which he had a laceration to his spleen. The incident that happened last Saturday, on the 25th of October, could have led to something massive had it not been quickly identified and treated, leading to the cessation of internal bleeding.
Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from the hospital—BCCI
The Indian star, who had to undergo a minor procedure, has now recovered from his fragile state, due to which he was kept under special supervision in the ICU. The BCCI medical team, who had constantly been updating on Shreyas’s health, has confirmed that he is doing well and has been discharged from the hospital today.

The BCCI has further extended its heartfelt thanks to the doctors from both nations who ensured the speedy recovery of the Indian batter. Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, were the men behind this remarkable recovery.
However, Iyer’s stay in Australia has been prolonged, as he will have to stay for further follow-ups and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly.
Will Shreyas Iyer be ruled out of the New Zealand series as well?
The Indian middle order has been one of the most exciting players for India in the 50-over format in recent times. Shreyas Iyer has been one of India’s top three run-scorers in the ICC World Cup 2023, the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and in ODIs over the last 2 years.
Iyer’s form has raised questions over his repeated snub from the T20I team and the coachship of Gautam Gambhir, as well as the criteria for team selection under the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. Even after a good half-century on the Australia tour, Shreyas rose to no. 9 in the ICC batting rankings.
However, the laceration injury is likely to keep Shreyas Iyer out of the field for around 2 months after he starts his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Hence, he can be considered ruled out of the South Africa home series. But his constant delay in returning to India has further raised questions about his comeback ahead of the New Zealand white-ball series starting on the 11th of January.
Tilak Varma or Rishabh Pant – Who is likely to replace Iyer for South Africa ODIs
Since Shreyas Iyer would no longer be a part of the upcoming series against South Africa, which starts on the 30th of November, India would have to consider options to replace him in the squad, as they have not picked any backup middle-order batter in the squads.
Rishabh Pant, who has been India’s substitute wicket-keeper in ODIs since the Champions Trophy, might be called in to bat at no. 4. While Tilak Varma, the young Indian batting sensation, might also be handed an ODI call-up, as he is a natural fit in the position.
