SMU Cruises to Home Wins Against Regional Competition
Southern Methodist University welcomed a variety of regional opponents to Dallas Friday as the Mustangs begin their second season competing in the ACC. The SMU women beat North Texas 193.5-99.5 while also taking victories over Incarnate Word (204-90) and Oklahoma Christian (208-79). The men’s team won 186-83 over Incarnate Word while defeating Oklahoma Christian 194-74.
The SMU women opened the meet with a win from Jimena Leal, Izzy Krantzcke, Cassidy Allison and Maddy Parker in the 200 medley relay in 1:40.85. Madeleine Herbert then won the 1000 freestyle (10:14.46), and Summer Osborne took first in the 200 free (1:47.02). Leal was victorious in the 100 backstroke (53.71), and Krantzcke topped the 100 breaststroke (1:03.21). Anne Marie Vlaic dominated the 200 butterfly (2:00.19).
Parker was the top performer in the 50 free, winning by almost a half-second in 22.84, while Osborne returned to the pool to grab first in the 100 free (49.24). Leah won again in the 200 back (1:57.74), and Krantzcke became the third SMU double-winner in the 200 breast (2:17.39). Herbert joined the list in the 500 free (4:57.34), as did Vlaic in the 100 fly (55.16).
Only one swimmer would win all three of her events, and that was Krantzcke, who went 2:05.17 for an easy victory in the 200 IM. Parker, Herbert, Chloe Corbin and Osborne combined to win the 400 free relay in 3:21.86. In diving, Macey Opplinger won 3-meter (300.15) while North Texas claimed a lone win on 1-meter from Sydney Guidara (274.35).
On the men’s side, the Southern Methodist team of Thad Austin, Kristaps Mikelsons, Nico Sobenes and Sage Sungail won the 200 medley relay in 1:28.22 before Jack Forrest pulled away for first in the 1000 free (9:13.62). Francis Brennan was victorious by a second in the 200 free (1:35.74), and Jack Berube grabbed the 100 back (47.69). Mikelsons came in first in the 100 breast (54.51), followed by Ryan Peckham taking out the 200 fly (1:48.85).
SMU’s Luke Sitz dominated 1-meter diving (370.25), and teammate RJ Snyder won on 3-meter (326.00). Benjamin Chateigner won the first event after the diving break, clocking 43.72 in the 100 free. Andy Baklanov cruised in the 200 back (1:44.44) before Joe Umhofer used a strong second half to finish clear of the field in the 200 breast (2:00.21).
Forrest completed the distance sweep with his time of 4:25.19 in the 500 free, and Aidan Arie grabbed first in the 100 fly (48.87). The 200 IM went to Baklanov (1:49.63), and the meet ended with Brennan, Chateigner, Sungail and Eli Likins combining for a time of 3:54.86 in the 400 free relay.
Incarnate Word’s Luis De Oliveira picked up a win in the 50 free in 20.06, the only victory on the men’s side from a non-SMU athlete.
