Sophie Cunningham Makes Her Priorities Clear Amid WNBA Drama

by

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham is set to be a free agent this offseason. There’ll be plenty of fans monitoring where she ends up.

Cunningham, who started her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury, averaged 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game this past season. She really stepped up for the Fever during Caitlin Clark’s absence. Unfortunately, her campaign was cut short due to a torn MCL.

“We missed her [Clark] out on the court this year, but depending on the CBA and what’s going on hopefully we’re all together again,” Cunningham said.

Speaking of the CBA, it’s very evident Cunningham wants the WNBA to have better leadership moving forward. League commissioner Cathy Engelbert hasn’t exactly raised the bar.

“I’m just tired of our league. They need to step up and be better,” Cunningham previously said. “Our leadership from top to bottom needs to be held accountable. I think there are a lot of people in positions of power in the WNBA who they might be really great businesspeople, but they don’t know s— about basketball. And that’s gotta change.”

Although the 2026 WNBA season is so far away, Cunningham shared her perspective on this offseason. She seems to be leading on her faith.

“Jesus is King,” Cunningham wrote on social media Wednesday. “Remember to stay focused on what is true, right, and just. Do not waiver [sic] in doing good. Be bold and courageous.”

Will the Fever keep Cunningham?

The Fever’s top priority this offseason will be to re-sign Kelsey Mitchell. She’s coming off an MVP-caliber season.

If the front office takes care of Mitchell early in free agency, they can shift their focus over to Cunningham. She earned $100,000 this past season, per Spotrac.

We’ll see if Cunningham and the Fever strike a deal in the coming months.
