South Carolina Women Finish Unbeaten Dual Meet Season vs. Georgia Tech
South Carolina finished a first unbeaten dual meet season since 1985 on Friday with a win over Georgia Tech in a cross-conference clash.
The Gamecocks women’s team claimed a 197-102 victory down in Atlanta to go 7-0 on the season. Georgia Tech’s men’s team scraped out a 151-137 victory.
South Carolina started fast at the McAuley Aquatic Center with a 1-2-3 in the 1,000 freestyle led by Nora Fluck. One-two results led by Alexis Dalton (1:01.69) in the 100 breaststroke and Jordan Agliano (1:54.87) in the 200 fly helped the Gamecocks take control. They sealed it with a 1-2-3 in the 200 breaststroke led by Delaney Franklin, who went on to win the 400 individual medley.
Kara West swept the sprint events, going 22.59 to win the 50 free and 49.30 to claim the 100 free. Agliano went 52.87 to edge Taylor Grimley by .08, Grimley second in both fly events.
Breckin Gormley led a 1-2-3 in the 500 with Fluck third. Emma Reiser was second in both. Amy Riordan won the 200 back. Sophie Verzyl scored 320.33 to win 1-meter diving and 378.38 to claim 3-meter.
Georgia Tech bookended the meet with relay wins. Vivien Rothwell, Anne Deedy, Nina Stanisavljevic and Anna Hadjilouizou went 1:38.27 in the 200 medley relay to edge SC by three tenths. Stanisavljevic, Hadjilouizou, Phoebe Wright and Jillian Ferrari won the 400 free in 3:16.70. Ferrari was second in the 100 free, Stanisavljevic and Hadjilouizou second and third in the 50.
Rothwell lowered her Georgia Tech record in the 100 back for the third time, clipping two tenths off her mark in a time of 52.53. Lili Gyurinovics won the 200 free. Wright (1:53.93) finished second in the 200 back in the second-fastest time in school history.
Georgia Tech won both of the men’s relays by tight margins. Ricky Balduccini, Joao Caballero, Stephen Jones and Robin Yeboah went 1:25.93 to win by a tenth. Yeboah, Balduccini, Chris Richardson and Caballero went 2:53.76, holding off South Carolina by .14 seconds.
Yeboah was outstanding by winning the 50 free in 19.74 and 100 free in 43.45. Balduccini’s 46.59 led the way in the 100 back. Berk Erturk won the 200 fly and 400 IM. Max Fowler swept both diving events.
South Carolina was led by wins in the 200 free and 500 free Pierre Largeron. Connor Fry was second in the 500 free after winning the 1,000 free. Einar Margeir Agustsson swept breaststroke, and Eldor Usmonov (100 fly) and Merlin Ficher (200 back) added wins.
