Stefanos Tsitsipas underwent hernia surgery today, Tennis24 Greece reports.
The 27-year-old Tsitsipas, who has been bothered by back issues in recent months, has not yet publicly commented on the surgery report.
“Stefanos Tsitsipas underwent surgery in the lower back to remove a hernia,” Tennis24 Greece reported today. “The surgery was performed at the Metropolitan and everything went well. But the time of his return to courts remains unknown.”
The 27-year-old Tsitsipas lost to Daniel Altmaier in a punishing five-setter in the US Open second round.
After Flushing Meadows, Tsitsipas represented Greece in Davis Cup play defeating Thiago Seyboth Wild before losing to Joao Fonseca 4-6, 6-3, 5-7.
Tsitsipas, who failed to reach a Grand Slam third round for the first time this season, was announced as the replacement for Jack Draper at the upcoming Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia, however it’s unknown if he will recover in time to play the lucrative exhibition event.
Jannik Sinner won a tennis record $6 Million champion’s check for capturing the Six Kings Slam championship last fall.
