UFC Fight Night 263: Steve Garcia full media day interview
UFC Fight Night 263 headliner Steve Garcia spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters at media day for his featherweight bout vs. David Onama.
LAS VEGAS – Steve Garcia feels the UFC featherweight division needs some movement at the top.
The rising featherweight contender sees a logjam at the title level and wants the champion Alexander Volkanovski to do something about it. Garcia (18-5 MMA, 7-2 UFC), who fights David Onama (14-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) this Saturday in the main event of UFC Fight Night 263 (ESPN+), urged Volkanovski to get a fight going, so the line of contenders gets some much-needed attention.
“Volk is too busy cooking,” Garcia said at the UFC Fight Night 263 media day. “He’s holding everybody at the top. He just needs to make a decision. Just pick somebody, I don’t know. Just pull it out of a hat. Somebody because they’re all waiting. Get the division going again. At the top, we can still fight, so that’s what we’re doing.”
Volkanovski reclaimed the UFC featherweight title this past April in the main event of UFC 314, defeating Diego Lopes in a unanimous decision. He has yet to book a fight since.
Meanwhile, Movsar Evloev remains unbeaten in the division, Lerone Murphy scored one of the best KOs of 2025 while also being unbeaten, and Lopes, who Volkanovski fought, already returned and secured a wild KO win over Jean Silva.
Garcia just wants to see the division moving again, but he does think on a merit standpoint, Evloev deserves the next title fight.
“I think if you’re a purist, Mosvar should probably get it,” Garcia said. “I don’t think people want to see that guy get it. I don’t think the UFC wants him to get it. But if you want to do right by somebody in your company, you’re probably going to have to, and you’re just going to have to trust that the champ does what he does and go out there and win that fight. At that point, I think the champ is the champ for a reason. I think Mosvar is good. I think he’s solid, but he’s definitely shown chinks in his armor throughout a few different fights.”
