The Golden State Warriors’ season continues to drift in the wrong direction, and head coach Steve Kerr is not deflecting blame. After another loss that spoiled a historic night from Stephen Curry, Kerr openly questioned his own performance as Golden State fell to 13–14 on the season.
Curry poured in 48 points and knocked down 12 three-pointers in Sunday night’s 136–131 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, yet the Warriors surrendered 40 fourth-quarter points and blew a double-digit lead late.
“I’m not doing my job well this year,” Kerr said speaking to reporters after the game.
The loss marked Golden State’s second straight defeat since Curry returned from a quad injury, despite the star guard scoring 87 points across those two games. Curry’s performance also carried historical weight, as he passed Michael Jordan for the most 40-point games by a player over the age of 30, now sitting at 45.
Turnovers remain the clearest issue. Golden State committed 18 of them against Portland, eight coming from Draymond Green. On the season, the Warriors are averaging 16 turnovers per game and have struggled mightily when losing the possession battle.
Green did not shy away from accountability following the game.
“Just making bad reads, bad decisions,” Green said. “Be more decisive. Take better care of it. Too f—ing old to be doing that.”
Offensively, the numbers paint a stark contrast depending on Curry’s presence. In his minutes, the Warriors score at a rate of 118.4 points per 100 possessions. Without him, that number drops to 107.1, which would rank below the league’s worst offense. Kerr acknowledged the need to simplify when Curry sits.
“I thought we did a better job last year putting him in position to attack and create shots for people,” Kerr said. “We need to get back to that type of control of the game where we are going to him in the half court.”
Curry, however, remains hopeful that clarity is coming.
“I’m hoping we can correct that and have a sustained run of games where you know who is out there and you know what the rotations are and guys get comfortable,” Curry said.
