With the Thunder now only one loss away from being unable to catch the Warriorsβ 73-9 single season record, Steve Kerr has weighed in.
After a blistering 24-1 start to the season from Oklahoma, there were rumblings that Golden Stateβs 2015-16 single-season record of 73 wins and 9 losses was in jeopardy.
Until it all came crashing down for OKC. They were defeated by the Spurs THREE TIMES and suffered back-to-back losses at the hands of the Suns and the Hornets.
Kerr does not think there is a way any team, including OKC will ever break the historic record.
βI remember at the time I thought no way,β Kerr said in pregame of the Warriorsβ 136-116 victory over Charlotte. βThen about a month ago, I thought it would be broken, and now I donβt think thereβs any way anybodyβs going to break it again. Itβs such a difficult thing.
βOklahoma City looked like they were on their way to doing it, but the reason itβs so hard is you have to have good health, you have to have some luck, and most teams probably arenβt going to push themselves that hard to get there. Itβs so difficult, so my guess is it wonβt be broken.β
Itβs been ten years since Kerr and the Warriorsβ set the precedent. The team were so dominant during the regular season and propelled themselves into the NBA Finals, but went down to the Cavaliers lead by LeBron James in Game 7.
The storied coach explained that although the record was a proud moment in time, itβs not something he or the team ever discuss today.
βNever,β Kerr said. βWe have a banner hanging in the facility commemorating the record, and, other than that, we never talk about it. Itβs an incredible accomplishment. I mean, just stunning to think about winning that many games. I think my favorite stat from that whole stretch was β we went like 135 games without losing two in a row.
βBecause losing two in a row in this league, itβs almost inevitable. Just given the way the schedule pans out and injuries, everything else. So, to go 130-odd games without losing two in a row was just stunning. So, Iβm really proud to be part of that team, but I donβt spend a whole lot of time looking back at it.β
