Steve Spurrier headlines South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame 2026 class

by

Former South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier was among 10 members selected to the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame’s class of 2026 on Jan. 20.

Spurrier coached at South Carolina from 2005-15 and led the Gamecocks to an 86-49 record, the most wins for a football coach in program history. He helped South Carolina win the SEC East division in 2010 and capture five bowl-game wins.

Spurrier retired in 2015, finishing his college head coaching career with a 228-89-2 record.

Spurrier played quarterback at Florida and won the Heisman Trophy in 1966. The San Francisco 49ers selected him third overall in the 1967 NFL Draft, and he played 10 seasons in the NFL.

He also coached at Duke and Florida, leading the Gators to the 1996 national championship.

Spurrier will be joined by former South Carolina defensive lineman Andrew Provence, who played for the Gamecocks from 1980-82. He is one of two former South Carolina players to finish his career with over 400 tackles, and he ranks second in program history in career sacks and fourth in career tackles for loss.

Clemson will have three inductees: former women’s basketball coach Jim Davis, former baseball pitcher Brian Barnes and sports information director Tim Bourret.

Davis led Clemson to 355 wins during an 18-year coaching career with the Tigers. He is the only men’s or women’s basketball coach in program history to lead Clemson to an ACC tournament championship, achieving the feat in 1995 and 1999. He is also the winningest coach in Clemson’s history, regardless of sport.

Barnes is first in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts and second in starts and complete games at Clemson. He owns the program’s single-season strikeout record (208) and won ACC player of the year and conference tournament MVP in 1989. He also spent five seasons in MLB.
