Sub-1:00 Breaststroker Sofia Szymanowski Verbally Commits to Michigan for 2027
NEW COMMIT: The University of Michigan has scored a big verbal commitment for Fall 2027 from Sofia Szymanowski, a breaststroker who is among the top recruits in this class. She hails from Newport Coast, Calif.
Regarding her commitment, she said:
“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Michigan! I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for being so supportive throughout this entire process. A special thank you to Coach Nathan for believing in me every step of the way and my former coach, Coach Hickman for always cheering me on. I am so grateful for Coach Bryon, Coach Matt, Coach Priscilla, and the rest of the Michigan staff for giving me this amazing opportunity. GO BLUE!”
Szymanowski does her club swimming with Irvine Novaquatics. She broke 1:00 in the 100 breast for the first time at Juniors West last month en route to finishing third, also notching a personal best in the 200 breast to place fourth. Last summer, she finished ninth in the 50m breast, 11th in the 100m breast and 20th in the 200m breast at Junior Nationals.
Her best times include:
- 50 breast – 28.19
- 100 breast – 59.97
- 200 breast – 2:12.09
- 200 IM – 2:01.61
- 100 free – 50.60
- 200 free – 1:49.44
Currently a junior at Corona Del Mar High School, Szymanowski was the 100 breast runner-up at the 2025 CIF Southern Section Division I Championship as a sophomore.
Szymanowski’s top 100 breast time would’ve ranked third on the Wolverines’ roster a season ago while her top 200 breast time would’ve been second. Michigan placed third at the 2025 Big Ten Championships.
