Summit Chess: Mountain hiking and playing chess

by

The hiking group dominates

Summit Chess is an invitation to combine chess with mountain hiking. Florian Raber, Gerhard Tober and Robert Wiesinger from the SV Steyregg (near Linz) planned to climb to Rudolfshütte, which is located at an altitude of 2,315 metres in Pinzgau, as they had done in previous years. This time, they planned to complete the journey from Kaprun in seven hours on foot, but the day before the tournament it was too wet and cold. Instead, they took the cable car.

The fact that they did not exhaust themselves on the climb later benefited the prevented hiking group at the board. Wiesinger, number 9 in the seedings, finished first with 5.5 points from 7 rounds. Among the pursuers, Tober (starting number 5) had the best score and took second place. Together with Florian Raber, they scored 14.5 points. Although the team competition was actually intended for four participants, the three of them scored more than the SK Uttendorf or SK Hallein.

Wiesinger was surprised by his victory himself, as he usually has problems with the clock in rapid chess. This cost him the game against Austrian national player Chiara Polterauer, which he considered his most interesting. However, his openings went so well that he had no problems with the clock and only conceded one draw. Incidentally, Wiesinger was persuaded to join the SV Steyregg almost twenty years ago at another hut tournament. It took place at the Schönbergalm (1,340 metres above sea level) on the Krippenstein, but has not been held for ten years.

Alongside Polterauer, who finished fourth, Magdalena Mörwald also competed for the tournament victory and secured the women’s prize. Grandmaster Andreas Diermair was actually expected to finish at the top. However, it was clear from the first round that things were not going well for him when the Styrian, who has been living in Vienna for two years, overlooked a mate in one. Things finally went wrong in round five against Tober with a kind of “premove” mistake: Diermair threatened mate in two, which his opponent “parried” by giving a rook. However, both sides had not seen the mate, and when “Dierli” took the rook instead of mating Tober it cost him his queen, the point and any chance of finishing in first place.

The children’s tournament

A children’s tournament also took place at the same time. Nine-year-old Konstantin Stadler from SV Nussdorf-Debant in East Tyrol won it. Fifteen children took part in the tournament, 36 in the open rapid tournament, and 16 in the bughouse tournament the previous evening, which was won by Diermair. Three days earlier, fresh snow had fallen, providing the players and their accompanying parents and partners with a backdrop more reminiscent of May.

Mother Birgit Vötter was delighted. “They have pieces in my colour.”

Everyone who had participated in the Summit Chess event at least five times was welcomed with a bottle of sparkling wine, including Manfred Grosse from SV Jedesheim 1921. He began his journey at 8 a.m. in Ulm using the Deutschland-Ticket. Delays quickly added up to two hours. By the time he arrived at Uttendorf station, the hiking bus to the valley station—20 kilometers away—had already left. Grosse tried hitchhiking, but he also missed the last cable car.

An experienced and sure-footed mountaineer, the Swabian sent word that he would make the ascent on foot. Despite the rain and taking a longer route to avoid a potentially grumpy herd of cows unsettled by the damp, chilly weather, Grosse reached the summit more than an hour faster than the posted hiking time.

Manfred Gosse decided to hike to the summit

This unique tournament is hosted by the SK Uttendorf and organised by Ortrun Göschl.

Organiser Ortrun Göschl

The former Austrian national player is a teacher in Pinzgau and is also very active in scholastic chess. Next year, summit chess is set to take place again at the beginning of July (at the start of the Austrian summer holidays) and may be kicked off with a summit tournament lasting several days with a long time limit.
