Super Rugby Americas Newcomers Los Capibaras Name Exciting Roster

by

The new franchise in Super Rugby Americas (SRA), Los Capibaras, has assembled an exciting roster for the SRA 2026 season. Los Capibaras represent El Litoral, and specifically rugby clubs throughout the provinces of Rosario, Entre Ríos and Santa Fe.

The birth of Los Capibaras means Argentina has four professional teams and now has 50% of the places in Super Rugby Americas. Los Capibaras join a year after Los Tarucas who play out of Tucumán. SRA also has Los Pampas (Buenos Aires) and Los Dogos (Córdoba) in addition to one team from each of Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

CAPIBARAS – ROSARIO, ENTRE RÍOS AND SANTA FE

The inaugural Capibaras roster contains 43 players. 27 of the players are contracted and 16 are invitational players. 39 of the players are from the Litoral region and the other also has places for players returning home from professional experiences abroad.

Jockey de Rosario is prominent on the inaugural Los Capibaras roster. Nine players from the Jockey Club are on the roster. Estudiantes, Duendes and Atlético del Rosario each have five players included while Tilcara has three and Paraná Rowing and CRAI have two each.

Additional clubs from El Litoral who have one player on the roster include Santa Fe Rugby, Uni de Santa Fe, Cha Roga, Logaritmo, Los Caranchos, Uni de Rosario and GER.

In terms of the unions, Rosario is the most represented with 23 players. Entrerriana is next with 11, and Santa Fe has five. This is inline with population as Rosario is easily the largest city in the region and is the third largest in Argentina.

The roster is completed but two players from Córdoba, one from Cuyo and one from San Juan.

HOMECOMING PROFESSIONALS

The roster includes players returning from professional experiences abroad. Examples are Lucas Bür, Jerónimo Gómez Vara and Martín Vaca from Major League Rugby (MLR) and Enzo Avaca from the United Rugby Championship (URC).

There are also many coming home from rival SRA teams. Among them is Manuel Bernstein who captained Los Pampas. Another is Ignacio Gandini, who is a former captain of Paraguay’s SRA franchise.

Seven recruits are former SRA champions with Los Dogos. They are Gandini, Lautaro Ciprani, Juan Baronio, Felipe Villagrán, Franco Rosetto and Diego Correa.

CAPIBARAS SEASON DEBUT

Los Capibaras will begin their rookie season preparations on January 15. The official SRA debut will make place in a home match against reigning champions Peñarol in Rosario on February 21. Los Capibaras will then place in the provincial capital of Santa Fe against Yacare on February 28.
