India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has revealed one of his biggest regrets – never getting the chance to play under MS Dhoni’s captaincy – while also sharing fascinating insights into how Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma differ as leaders.
Speaking at the JITO Connect 2025 event, Suryakumar reflected on his journey, his learnings from Dhoni and the qualities that make Kohli and Rohit unique captains.
Suryakumar Yadav’s regret: Never playing under Dhoni
Having made his India debut in 2021 – four years after Dhoni stepped down as captain – Suryakumar admitted he always wished to represent India under Captain Cool.
Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of cricketers.
“I always wanted to get an opportunity when he was India’s captain, but I never got it,” Suryakumar said. “I saw him behind the stumps whenever I played against him in the IPL. One thing I learned from him was to stay calm in pressure situations. He never panicked, he would observe the game and then make decisions.”
The flamboyant batter, who has faced Dhoni multiple times in the IPL, described the former skipper’s demeanour as “unshakably composed,” adding that he tries to emulate Dhoni’s calmness in his own captaincy.

Reflecting on his early international days, Suryakumar credited – under whose leadership he made his India debut – for pushing players to go beyond their comfort zones.
“Virat bhai is a very hard taskmaster. He pushes your limits and wants the best from everyone,” Suryakumar said. “He brings unmatched energy both on and off the field. You can feel his intensity every time he leads the team.”

Kohli’s passionate leadership style, according to Suryakumar, made every player accountable and motivated to perform under pressure. The current T20I skipper noted that Kohli’s commitment to fitness and aggression set new benchmarks for professionalism in Indian cricket.
Having played extensively under Rohit Sharma for both the Indian team and Mumbai Indians (MI), Suryakumar praised the former Indian captain for creating a relaxed yet focused environment in the dressing room.
“Rohit bhai is someone who makes everyone around him comfortable. His door is open 24/7 for everyone,” Suryakumar said. “He’s an inspiration for young players – calm, approachable, and always leading by example.”
Suryakumar added that Rohit’s man-management skills and ability to handle pressure with composure are qualities he tries to adopt in his own leadership.
“Every captain I’ve played under has taught me something unique. I just try to take the best from all of them,” he concluded with a smile.
