by

In a battle of two seeded players, Taylor Fritz bested the last Canadian hope in Toronto. The 2nd seed ousted Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 15 minutes for a place in the last 16.

The American has won 17 of the previous 20 matches. He will seek another good performance against the young Czech, Jiri Lehecka. Diallo suffered an early break in the first set but fought well after that.

However, Fritz overpowered him in set number two to seal the deal without spending too much time on the court and remain on the title course. World no. 4 is trying to become the first American champion in Canada since Andy Roddick in 2003.

The favorite dropped ten points in nine service games. He defended a lone break point and kept the pressure on the home star. Diallo sprayed six double faults and gave away 44% of the points in his games.

He played against seven break points and suffered three breaks to end his campaign in the third round. Taylor landed 11 winners and 16 unforced errors. He welcomed 33 unforced mistakes from his opponent.

The American had the upper hand in service winners and from the baseline, while Gabriel claimed seven points more at the net. The Canadian made a terrible start and sprayed a forehand error in the first game for a break at love.

Fritz barely lost a point in the initial three service games, forging a 4-2 advantage. The 2nd seed faced the only break point in the eighth game, denying it with an ace and holding for a 5-3 lead.

Taylor served for the opener at 5-4 and held at 15 following Gabriel's forehand error, closing the first part of the duel in 40 minutes. The American provided four comfortable holds in the second set and kept the pressure on the other side.

Diallo missed a routine forehand in the third game to suffer a break and move closer to the exit door. Fritz cemented the lead with a hold at 15 in the fourth game and landed an ace two games later for 4-2.
