IM Renato Terry won another 3 0 Thursday tournament on December 4, marking the third consecutive week that he’s won one of the three events. No one else has won more than once since the event debuted on November 6. GM Vladislav Artemiev and IM Anthony Atanasov won the other two tournaments of the day.
Undefeated Artemiev Wins First Tournament
GM Anish Giri got off to a hot start in the first tournament of the day, winning his first six games. After a round-seven draw with Artemiev, Giri faced GM Sina Movahed in a wild Sicilian Dragon.
Giri soon bemoaned his missed chances on X.
Missed opportunity! White to play and win.
I should have seen a move ahead and not just capture on h6 with the rook. pic.twitter.com/GzbTE6dIQj

While Giri couldn’t keep up the pace, Artemiev kept going, winning in round eight against GM Jeffery Xiong and then playing this smooth game against GM Alan Pichot in the ninth:
With 8/9 points, Artemiev cruised into first place with draws in the final two rounds against Movahed and GM Denis Lazavik. The three of them tied for first place with 9/11, leaving Artemiev in first, Movahed in second and Lazavik third after tiebreaks applied.
IM Nataliya Buksa earned the top women’s prize with 6/11, a result that was even more impressive because she missed the first round of the tournament!
Terry Wins Again In Second Tournament
Terry won the third tournament the past two Thursdays, but this time he won ahead of schedule in the second event. Terry started well, with six wins and two draws in the first eight rounds, but he ran into FM Artin Ashraf in round nine.
The win put Ashraf in the lead, and he continued by beating GM Andrey Esipenko on time in round 10. But Ashraf finally stumbled at the finish line, dropping a game against FM Dincer Tasdogen. That was just the opening Terry needed to catch up by winning a dramatic back-and-forth game against GM Dmitrij Kollars.
The win brought Terry to 9/11 and first place on tiebreaks over Ashraf. Tasdogen scored 8.5/11 and earned third place. The top women’s prize went to NM Liudmyla Ivanytska with 6/11.
Atanasov Breaks Through To Win Third Tournament
Terry had another great start in the third tournament, scoring six points in his first seven rounds. However, he lost in the eighth round against GM Mahammad Muradli and proceeded to lose the final four games of the event. Muradli took over the lead and appeared set to win with 8/9. However, disaster struck in the final two games. He dropped his tenth round game to CM Georgijs Germanovs and then got ground down by Xiong in the final game.
Meanwhile, the 17-year old Canadian IM Anthony Atanasov recovered from a ninth round loss to Muradli by winning a dramatic game against Terry in the 10th round.
Atanasov followed that fortunate victory with a queen sacrifice to defeat GM Jose Martinez Alcantara and clinch first place with 8.5/11. GM Sam Sevian won his final three games to also reach 8.5 points, taking second on tiebreaks. Muradli took third with eight points. The top women’s prize went to IM Karina Ambartsumova with 6.5 points, including a win over 3012-rated GM Temur Kuybokarov.
