Texas A&M Aggies and Mike Elko land elite offensive recruit that should spark major momentum for their 2027 recruiting class originally appeared on A to Z Sports.

Mike Elko is beginning to build Texas A&M back to recruiting powerhouse status. 2024 was a bit rough as the program was in coaching transition. In 2025 Elko got the Aggies back up to the top ten in the country. 2026 looks like a top five class already with 27 commits in place heading into the season.

Now Mike Elko and his staff have already locked in their first 2027 recruiting commit and it might just spark some major momentum here soon.

Jayce Johnson, 4 star QB recruit commits to Mike Elko and Texas A&M

Thanks to the emergence of Marcel Reed as a potentially special dual threat talent last year, Texas A&M looks set at quarterback for the next couple years. However, once Reed is gone Mike Elko will need to make sure that he has the foundation of A&M’s future secured at the most important position.

That’s exactly what it looks like he’s done as highly rated four star 2027 QB recruit Jayce Johnson committed to Texas A&M over the weekend. For those unfamiliar with Johnson, he is currently ranked as the third best quarterback overall in the 2027 recruiting class following an incredible 2024 season, his first year as a starter. Johnson chose Texas A&M over Florida State and Mississippi State.

Though Johnson is still just a rising junior in high school he’s already amassed over 30 scholarship offers from major programs around the country. Still, despite all that early interest he had no problem recognizing the immense opportunity before him with Texas A&M.

The Aggies do have a few quarterbacks they brought into their 2025 class (via portal and freshmen) to build depth behind Marcel Reed. They also have Helaman Casuga (a mid-level four star) committed for 2026. Jayce Johnson is looking like he’ll be better than all of them when he arrives on campus. He should have a real shot to start from day one.

At 6’3″, 205 pounds with natural arm talent and impressive dual threat athleticism, Jayce Johnson looks like a Marcel Reed with superior touch passing and pocket presence. No, this is not another stereotypical knock on Reed’s passing. It’s all about just how special Johnson looks already.

As more recruits get eyes on how insanely talented Johnson is, it’s quite likely that many young 2027 prospects start following suit and committing to Texas A&M. Johnson is the kind of talent that wide receivers will love to play with, and offensive linemen will want to block for, as Elko continues building recruiting momentum.
