Now heading into Week 7 of the season, the landscape is beginning to take shape among the middle-tier programs. At the same time, the top 10 teams continue to solidify their claims for a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff.
Technically, it’s still premature to lock anyone into the CFP, but we’re starting to get a clearer picture of those squads that stumbled early and what they must do to re-enter the conversation. Take Notre Dame, for instance. They dropped two early contests to Miami and Texas A&M. However, their remaining schedule is highly favorable, and those two fiercely competitive losses are aging well with each passing week.

Texas A&M has been earning its accolades this season, but until it notches nine wins, skeptics will continue to label it as nothing more than an 8–4 team. Honestly, it’s hard to fault that perspective. We’ve seen this narrative before: A&M limping into a low-stakes bowl game with half the roster opting out. The difference this time is that the Aggies resemble a bona fide SEC contender, anchored by a culture of accountability. Coach Mike Elko’s tenure is still in its early stages, but the trajectory is undeniably promising.

Texas A&M vs Utah

Talk about rare matchups—these programs have only squared off three times, with the most recent clash in 2004 resulting in a 41–24 road defeat for the Aggies. This pairing would offer fans a fresh spectacle and give A&M a shot at redemption for a two-decade-old loss.

Texas A&M vs Georgia
-
Surprisingly, this would be the second meeting between these teams since A&M joined the SEC. The Georgia game is one Aggie fans have long clamored for. Thanks to revamped scheduling by conference officials, these teams will face off more frequently moving forward. It’s only fitting that if they meet this season, it’s on the CFP stage.

There’s limited history between these programs, having only met five times. The Vols hold a 3–2 series edge and have transformed into a formidable squad with transfer quarterback Joey Aguilar at the helm. Both teams look strong this year, and since they don’t meet in the regular season, a playoff showdown would be a thrilling spectacle.

Bonagura – Texas A&M vs Texas Tech
-
This would be a must-watch rivalry game, dating back to 1927. The series is tight, with the Aggies holding a 37–32–1 advantage, including a win in their final meeting before departing for the SEC in the 2011–12 season. Another intriguing subplot: the Micah Hudson saga, where the player transferred to A&M only to return to Texas Tech before spring practices even began.
Schlabach – Texas A&M vs South Florida
-
Here’s another compelling matchup. On paper, A&M should be the overwhelming favorite, but South Florida has proven it can compete with elite programs, making this a potential upset alert. These teams have never faced each other so that the winner will earn inaugural bragging rights.
