Texas A&M starts 7-0 for the first time since 1994, eyes SEC title and Playoff Berth

Texas A&M has always been considered a “football” school, but it has never truly captured the attention of the national media as a blue blood. There have been several strong individual seasons, or even a two- or three-year stretch where they experienced decent success.

The best period in the modern era came under R.C. Slocum, who went 42-5-1 between 1991 and 1994. There are a lot of similarities between eras, and if Coach Mike Elko can replicate some of the regular-season success of Coach Slocum, the program will be in an excellent position for years to come.

Coach Elko has made it known that when his time in Aggieland is over, he wants to leave it better than he found it—and as one of the premier destinations to play college football. After an encouraging 8-4 season in 2025, the Aggies are off to their best start since 1994, when A&M went 10-1 and finished No. 8 at the end of the season. That year, A&M had the No. 28 offense and the No. 4 defense. However, due to NCAA sanctions, one of the best teams they ever fielded was ineligible for the championship and postseason.

R.C. Slocum, Head Coach for the Texas A&M Aggies during the NCAA Southwest Conference college football game against the University of Houston Cougars on 26th October 1991 at Kyle Field, College Station, Texas, United States. Texas won the game 27 – 18.

In year two, Coach Elko has the Aggies at 7-0 for the first time since the 1994 season and ranked No. 3—their highest rating since 1995. They currently boast the No. 17 total offense (464.0 yards per game) and the No. 37 total defense (327.7 yards per game).

The most impressive thing I’ve seen so far this season is their ability to find ways to win games when their backs are against the wall. It’s crunch time, and the Aggies have a golden opportunity to change the trajectory of the program.

They cannot afford to falter at this point in the season, as the postseason picture is taking shape and A&M controls its destiny for the SEC title game and a College Football Playoff berth. Five games are remaining, and Coach Elko is working to keep the ship on course.
