Texas A&M’s 2025 football season was by no means a failure, as the Aggies, led by second-year head coach Mike Elko, made the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, while finishing 11-2, and with an undefeated record in Kyle Field, outside of falling to national runner-up Miami in the first round of the CFP.
Yes, falling to the Hurricanes, despite their run to the National Championship game, could, and should have been avoided if the wind wasn’t an issue, combined with Texas A&M starting quarterback Marcel Reed making better decisions in the pocket.

After finishing his first full season with 3,192 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, the incoming redshirt junior announced his return for the 2026 season, and for the Aggie fans still unsure of his ability to lead the Aggies back to the CFP, and past the first round, new offensive coordinator Holman Wiggins, and first-year quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch will be the central figures amid his potential improvement.
While we could spend this article discussing both assistant coaches’ trajectories, SEC Unfiltered hosts Chris Phillips and Cole Thompson released their early SEC quarterback rankings, both placing Marcel Reed at No. 7, below two transfer quarterbacks who have yet to take a snap for their news teams, while Phillips ranked Texas QB Arch Manning, and Thompson placing the Longhorn signal caller at No. 2.
New Auburn QB Byrum Brown and new LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt, who came in at No. 6 and No. 5 in both rankings, have plenty to prove in their new systems, and while both players are certainly two of the more talented playmakers at the position, Reed has now been in the SEC for three seasons, and has faced much tougher defenses compared to Brown’s time at UCF, and Leavitt’ career at Arizona State.
However, I do agree that Reed should be ranked 5-7, but Chris Phillips ranking of Oklahoma quarterback No. 4 is highly questionable, given his below-average play after returning from injury this season, and I think many can agree that Reed is a much more consistent player despite his struggles against Texas and Miami.
