Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt declares Houston 8th home game: ‘Houston is West Texas’

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt has begun the trash talk with Houston early.

Ahead of the in-state matchup between the No. 14 Red Raiders (4-1, 1-0 Big 12) and Houston (4-0, 1-0), Hocutt took to his personal X account (formerly Twitter), calling the matchup for Texas Tech from TDECU Stadium in Houston as a home game for the Red Raiders.

“Red Raider Nation, it’s official — we have declared Saturday night’s game in Houston our eighth home game this season,” Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt posted X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday night. “Houston is West Texas.”

Texas Tech won the last matchup between the schools, 49-28 in Lubbock, Texas, on Sept. 30, 2023. The last time the Red Raiders played in Houston was on Sept. 4, 2021, when they defeated the Cougars 38-21.

The Cougars lead the all-time series 18-16-1, but Texas Tech has won six in a row in the series.

According to the San Antonio Express, there have been six sellouts in the history of TDECU Stadium, which opened in 2014 and has a capacity of 40,000 fans. The last sellout was in 2023 against Texas.
