We’ve talked plenty about the best irons of 2025. But sometimes, the clubs at the bottom of the leaderboard can help us learn as well.
Our 2025 iron testing revealed what happens when an iron design doesn’t come together across all performance categories. Some of these clubs had standout strengths like great distance, exceptional feel or appealing looks but couldn’t deliver across the board.
These are the irons that struggled the most in 2025.
Worst performing golf irons of 2025
| Category | Iron Model | Key Strength | Main Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Player’s | Sub 70 669 TC | Strong distance for its category | Accuracy, inconsistency and limited forgiveness |
| PXG 0317CB | Better-than-average forgiveness for a compact shape | Accuracy and distance lagged behind peers | |
| Player’s Distance | Ben Hogan Legend | Balanced numbers across all metrics | No standout category, unremarkable results |
| Tour Edge Exotics C725 | Good feel | No standout category, unremarkable results | |
| Game-Improvement | Vice Golf VGI02 | Impressive distance potential | Low accuracy and forgiveness scores |
| Maxfli XC3 | Reliable forgiveness for a value iron | Distance and accuracy trailed the category leaders | |
| Super Game-Improvement | COBRA DS-Adapt | Excellent distance for its category | Weaker accuracy and forgiveness consistency |
| Fourteen Golf PC-3 Forged | Smooth feel | Average across every metric |
What we can learn from this
1. It’s not enough to be average at everything
Several of the irons that finished near the bottom, like the Ben Hogan Legend and Fourteen Golf PC-3, had consistent performance across distance, accuracy and forgiveness, which may sound solid but doesn’t stand out in a test like this. Most of the leaders excel across multiple metrics. Being “fine” in every area often puts an iron at the bottom of the list.
2. Extreme strengths come with trade-offs
Some models, notably the COBRA DS-Adapt and Vice Golf VGI02, produced excellent distance but weaker dispersion and forgiveness. That’s the trade-off with designs that chase ball speed above all else. Find an iron that helps you produce ball speed and distance but don’t give up on accuracy and forgiveness because of it. There are options in 2025 that make this possible.
Final thoughts
Test results like these don’t tell you what not to play; they tell you what to look for when you get fitted. Maybe you need more launch, maybe your distance gaps disappear with a different shaft or maybe you’ll realize that forgiveness isn’t what’s holding you back. Use the data to narrow your choices and then get tested to see what actually fits you.
