The Chronicle Profiles The Duke Basketball Staff

by

Following the Duke Chronicle’s player profiles, we now get a look at the coaching staff. As we’ve argued before, the transition from G.O.A.T. Mike Krzyzewski to Jon Scheyer has been incredibly impressive. Duke has maintained its seat at the Blue Blood table, still quite elite.

Scheyer loses Jai Lucas from his staff – Lucas takes over at Miami – but gets Chris Carrawell and Emanuel Dildy back.

If you’ve seen Carrawell at all or listened to him, you understand the impact he has as a recruiter. He’s naturally gregarious, funny and smart. He’s a huge asset.

Dildy we don’t know as well but he’s been at Valparaiso, Missouri, Loyola and Eastern Illinois and is well known as a solid recruiter.

New to the staff: Evan Bradds and former Duke point guard Tyler Thornton.

Bradds played at Belmont for Rick Byrd and coached in the NBA with the Boston Celtics, their G League team the Maine Red Claws and the Utah Jazz. He’s interesting not just because of his coaching chops but because of his NBA ties. That’s deeply useful in today’s game.

Most of us will remember Thornton. He was recruited to Duke as insurance for Kyrie Irving and while he wasn’t a profoundly athletic player, he was smart and rugged and played very well during his time at Duke. He has always struck us a born coach. His future looks unbelievably bright.

It’s a solid staff from top to bottom and again, Duke Basketball looks to be in good hands.
