Imagine it’s your first full season on the PGA Tour. You go straight to No. 1 in driving distance.
That’s what Aldrich Potgieter did in 2025.
After leading the Korn Ferry Tour in driving distance, Potgieter arrived on the PGA Tour and proved his speed translated to the big leagues. He averaged 325.0 yards per drive, first on Tour. He outpaced Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Åberg and the entire modern power group.
But the deeper story wasn’t about distance.
2025: Longest but not driving leader overall
Potgieter’s 2025 season showed a clear split between power and performance.
He ranked:
- 1st in Driving Distance (325.0 yards)
- 156th in Fairways Hit (55.63%)
- 137th in Approach Play
- 173rd Around the Green
- 90th Overall
He was the longest player on Tour but outside the top 150 in fairways hit. His iron play and short game dragged his overall performance and scoring down despite the speed advantage.
Even equipment-wise, there was an adjustment during the year. He began 2025 with a Titleist GT3 driver before moving into the Titleist GT2 driver, the club he had in play when he won the Rocket Classic.
2026: A full equipment reset
Entering 2026, Potgieter switched his entire bag to PXG, putting the Lightning Max-10K+ driver (10.5°) in play. When I first looked at his 2026 driving stats, the first thing that stood out was that he is no longer first in driving distance.
At first glance, I wondered if it was the club but I dug a little deeper to see the full picture.
The early 2026 numbers
Through Pebble Beach, here’s what the rankings show:
- 3rd in Driving Distance (327.1 yards)
- 97th in Fairways Hit (59.09%)
- 6th in Clubhead Speed
- 164th in Approach Play
- 131st in Putting
- 146th Overall
Look at the driving metrics closely. He’s longer than last year and, as of right now, more accurate than last year. His scoring categories still need some help.
It’s early but the pattern is consistent with what we saw in 2025. For Potgieter, the distance has never been the problem.

Final thoughts
When you look at amateur data, there’s a clear scoring difference between golfers who have more yardage. Extra distance does make the game easier.
But it only helps to a point.
For Potgieter, the goal in 2026 doesn’t appear to be dominating the distance category. He’s proved he can do that. The focus seems to be on cleaning up the other stats. Early numbers show driving accuracy improving. Now the next step is converting those tee shots into better approach play and better scoring around the greens.
If you aren’t the longest in your group, there’s hope. Distance matters. It creates opportunity. But if you want to win at any level, you have to turn those extra yards into scoring chances. Let’s see if this new PXG setup helps Potgieter do that.
