The video looks at the three roles Steve Sarkisian has in his offense for the wide receiver position. There are three main ones: slot, X, and Z. Sarkisian’s receivers move all over the field, but they have some responsibilities that are common down-to-down.

X is an evolution of the split end position from older football offenses. In Sarkisian’s offense, X receivers line up next to the H and is often aligned to the field. Some offenses put the X into the boundary, but not Sarkisian. He’s a “speed guy” that you can move in space and utilize his speed. Xavier Worthy and Matthew Golden are often in this spot.

Z is an evolution of “flanker.” Sarkisian puts these receivers on the boundary and align him with the tight end. Players like Adonai Mitchell and Ryan Wingo fit into this role. Catching contested passes in limited space is a regular ask of this spot.

Slot, or H, is where you would see Jordan Whittington or DeAndre Moore. Physicality is needed from this position, as well as some short area quickness that allows for him to take advantage of two-way go’s. Slot receivers can also be “flexed out running backs,” but Sarkisian asks a lot of the position.
