The December 16 episode of NXT was a very fun show. The night saw a shocking title change, but the confusion on television was well deserved.
Thea Hail was able to beat Blake Monroe for the Women’s North American Title this week on NXT. The finish of the match seemed very confusing, and many fans wondered if this was actually the plan, after all, they accidentally played Monroe’s music first after the match.
Sean Ross Sapp reported on Fightful Select that Thea Hail’s NXT North American Championship win was not the planned outcome. This confirms the overall idea that things just seemed off during that title change.
The finish caused confusion, as Monroe appeared to get a hand up but not a shoulder before the referee’s three-count. There was also a noticeable delay before Hail’s entrance music played.
According to the report, NXT sources confirmed the result was unintentional and Monroe was originally set to retain the championship. A scramble reportedly took place backstage immediately after the finish once the mistake was recognized.
The report noted that creative plans had specifically been laid out with Hail not holding the title, forcing rapid changes to ongoing storylines. Those adjustments impacted creative plans for multiple talents over the following weeks.
Fightful was told that steps were expected to be taken as early as that night to address the situation. No immediate blame was assigned, as those involved focused on quickly revising plans moving forward.
We will have to see what NXT does with this title change. It was certainly an interesting way for Thea Hail to make her way toward Christmas.
