Tim Howard on MLS schedule change: ‘It needed to happen’

The former U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper – who played ten seasons in Major League Soccer – spoke about the league’s decision to change to a summer-to-spring schedule beginning in 2027. Tim spoke on behalf of Hyundai, an official 2026 FIFA World Cup sponsor.

It needed to happen.

They’re obviously very excited about it.

I am, as well.

You know, getting sort of aligned with the rest of the world and FIFA International calendar is important.

It’s important for various reasons.

You know.

One of those that I think is, you know, Being aligned with transfers.

In MLS for so long, we’ve been, we’ve been secondary, we’ve been behind the transfer Market, because youre playing catch-up based on the season.

Now we kind of run in conjunction with everybody else, and so it creates a bit like a Level playing field.

Well, Hyundai has a very long-standing Partnership with soccer dating back to 99.

Mia and I are here, supporting them, supporting their World Cup initiative.

All the great things theyre doing with FIFA Fanfest, FIFA museums.

What it does is bring people together.

What we know about soccer, more than anything, else, is its a community.

They love people.

People love being together when they can Soccer, and so this just sort of fosters that.
