The two-time defending champs will be down a key piece to begin the 2026 season.
Though Edman is taking swings, Roberts said that the team is taking a “methodical” approach in Edman’s recovery. The 30-year-old originally underwent surgery in November.
Edman dealt with a nagging ankle injury for much of the 2025 season, twice landing on the injured list. The injury hampered him throughout the Dodgers’ postseason run, too, limiting him to infield duties until the World Series, when a prolonged slump from Andy Pages practically forced Edman to take over in center field.
The seven-year veteran hit .225/.274/.382 across 97 games last season, seeing time at second base, third base and center field.
With Edman sidelined, Los Angeles still has a few capable options at second base, including postseason hero Miguel Rojas, Hyeseong Kim and Alex Freeland. Roberts noted that Kim and Freeland are essentially competing for the same role on the 26-man roster to start the season.
Kim could also see additional time in center field, with Edman’s injury limiting the team’s depth behind Pages.
The Dodgers begin their quest for a three-peat on March 26 in L.A. against the D-backs.
