Tommy Fleetwood disappointed by Luke Donald’s 2023 Ryder Cup decision

by

European team captain Luke Donald is aware that Tommy Fleetwood can be an important figure in his team at the upcoming Ryder Cup. The English golfer's season is truly commendable, and it seems that Tommy will be one of the leaders of this team.

Speaking to the No Laying Up podcast, the English golfer reflected on some earlier editions of the Ryder Cup, recalling when captain Donald sent him out as 11th at this prestigious tournament two years ago.

Fleetwood was not particularly satisfied with that decision, aware that he would not have had any impact regarding the final outcome, but he can be satisfied with how it all ended.

“I played 11 at Whistling Straits and it just wasn’t a great spot to be in for that one because we struggled as a team, and then the Ryder Cup was sort of done early on in the singles.

“So for us being at the back, it was a bit deflating being at the back.

So in the Saturday night in 2023, the singles draw hadn’t been done yet and I said to Claire, ‘I feel like I know where Luke is going to put me and I don’t really want to go there, I’ve just got this feeling that I’m going to go out back end at 11 again’. Because if we started off great, the Ryder Cup will be over and I won’t be that interested in my point.

But then actually, it could come down to us and at that point, there’s a lot of pressure.“- he said, as quoted by The Golfing Gazette.

What can we expect from Fleetwood?

The experienced Englishman could be the key to the European team's success at this year's Ryder Cup on Bethpage Black. Although the European team has many quality golfers, including young but experienced players, Fleetwood will certainly be one of the main faces of the team.

Luke Donald certainly has ideas and plans for him, as well as for pairings, but we won't be able to find out any time soon.
