Tony Ferguson should retire or he’ll become ‘king of CTE’

by

Colby Covington wants Tony Ferguson to call it a career after notching his first win in over six years.

Ferguson finished social media influencer “Salt Papi” by Round 3 TKO in this past Saturday’s Misfits Boxing 22 at AO Arena in Manchester, England. The former UFC interim lightweight champion hadn’t won a fight since stopping Donald Cerrone in June 2019. He would go on a UFC record eight-fight losing streak, five by finish, before parting ways with the promotion.

Now that Ferguson is back in the win column, Covington urges him to stop fighting.

“After our last interaction at that press conference, I think we’re friends,” Covington said of Ferguson on his YouTube channel. “I don’t know– it went so many different ways. We were friends, we were enemies, then we were friends, then we were enemies again. But Team U.S.A., brother. Happy for him. Congratulations to Tony for actually winning a fight.

“Even though it was against some influencer that has no combat sports experience, a win’s a win. My advice to Tony is, quit while you’re ahead and ride off into the sunset. Go enjoy time with your family, brother. If you get back in there, you’re going to get hurt and no one wants to see you get hurt, Tony, because we like you. No more hits to the head, and no reason to give duck-lipped (Justin) Gaethje a run for his money for King of CTE.”

However, Ferguson has no intentions of retiring. The 41-year-old wants to keep fighting under Misfits banner after his emotional win.
